Fujifilm unveils GFX100S II with 102MP sensor for NZD $9699

Fri, 31st May 2024

FUJIFILM Corporation has introduced the latest addition to its GFX series of mirrorless digital cameras, the GFX100S II. This new model is equipped with a 102MP high-speed sensor, the GFX 102MP CMOS II, and the X-Processor 5, all housed within a body weighing approximately 883 grams, including battery and memory card.

The company highlights that the large format sensor in the GFX100S II is about 1.7 times larger than a standard 35mm full-frame sensor. This allows the camera to offer exceptional image quality, capturing finer details with rich tonal expressions and three-dimensional rendering. The use of AI-based subject detection is a notable upgrade from its predecessor, the GFX100S.

The camera’s enhanced autofocus (AF) system features fast and precise subject tracking, supported by an improved continuous shooting speed of up to 7.0 frames per second. Additionally, the in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) function now offers eight-stop, five-axis performance, making it the best in the GFX series. This allows photographers to achieve high-quality images in a variety of conditions without compromising on mobility.

The GFX100S II also caters to videographers, offering vibrant and smooth 4K/30P video recording capabilities. This makes high-quality video production more accessible to both professionals and hobbyists. The camera body will be available in black starting from mid-June at an indicative price of NZD $9699 (body only).

The company touts several key features of the GFX100S II, starting with its 102MP large format sensor, which is said to deliver an extraordinary level of image quality. Improvements in pixel structure have increased capacity for saturated electrons, permitting the use of ISO80 as a standard sensitivity. This results in images with greater dynamic range and lower noise compared to previous models.

Further advancements include improved micro lenses on the sensor to enhance light efficiency at the sensor's edges, thus improving image quality and AF accuracy. The camera also offers 20 different 'film simulation' modes, allowing users to select a variety of colour expressions that best suit their subjects or scenes. Among these is the ‘REALA ACE’ mode, known for faithful colour reproduction and well-defined tonal expression.

Another notable feature is the 'Pixel Shift Multi-Shot' functionality, which leverages the IBIS system to capture images with approximately 400 million pixels. Additionally, a ‘Real Color’ mode generates high-resolution images while suppressing false colours, enabling higher quality captures in less time and with less data compared to its predecessor.

Despite these enhancements, the GFX100S II has maintained compact dimensions—approximately 104mm height and 87mm depth—making it the lightest model in the GFX series with a 102MP large format sensor. A new texture, BISHAMON-TEX, has been introduced to improve grip and support handheld shooting.

The camera’s advanced AF system, which includes both face and eye detection, is further bolstered by AI-based subject detection. This deep learning technology can recognise a range of subjects, including animals, birds, and vehicles. A high-magnification, high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) and improved continuous shooting features further enhance user experience.

In the video domain, the GFX100S II supports 4K/30P recording with a standard ISO of 100 for higher quality footage. An AF tracking function during video recording, and the ability to record in 4K/30P 4:2:2 10bit on internal SD cards, add to its versatile capabilities. External SSD recording with Apple ProRes and F-Log2 support for wide dynamic range recordings also contribute to the camera's appeal for video professionals.

The GFX100S II also supports Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud feature, enabling direct uploads of video and still image files, thereby expediting the workflow from shooting to editing.
