TCL has launched a new NXTPAPER range in Australia, including two smartphones and three tablets.

The products will go on sale through major retailers including JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Harvey Norman, with prices ranging from AUD $449 to AUD $1,299.

The launch centres on TCL's latest version of NXTPAPER, a display system designed to make reading on phones and tablets easier in bright light and over longer sessions. A dedicated NXTPAPER Key on the new devices lets users switch between three display settings: Regular Mode, Paper Ink Mode and Max Ink Mode.

Paper Ink Mode reduces colour on the screen, while Max Ink Mode uses a monochrome display, silences notifications and is designed to extend battery life. TCL is targeting readers who want an e-reader-style experience without carrying a separate device.

Kurt Bonnici, Telecommunications Business Manager, TCL Electronics Australia and New Zealand, said current mobile screens are often not designed with reading in mind.

"Australians are spending more time looking at screens than ever, and a lot of that is reading - whether it be emails, news, books or social media - but most smartphone and tablet screen technologies still aren't built for it," Bonnici said.

"Until now, people have had to choose - a vivid, high-quality screen that tires your eyes, or a paper-like e-reader that sacrifices colour and everything else your phone can do.

"Whether you're browsing in the midday sun or in bed last thing at night, you shouldn't have to compromise. That's where NXTPAPER technology comes in - with the NXTPAPER Key, you can quickly and easily switch your phone or tablet into a paper-like reading mode, without having to keep a second device at hand."

Phone range

The smartphone line-up is led by the P80 Series, which TCL describes as its first range to combine NXTPAPER with a 1.5K AMOLED display. Both handsets have a 6.83-inch 120Hz display, 8GB of RAM, a 5,800mAh battery, and support for Google Gemini and Circle to Search.

The TCL P80 Pro is priced at AUD $799 and comes with 256GB of storage and a 50MP main camera. The TCL P80 Ultra, priced at AUD $999, adds 512GB of storage and a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera alongside the main and ultra-wide cameras.

The displays cover 100% of the DCI-P3 colour range and reach up to 3,200 nits of peak brightness. Both models are available in Midnight Blue.

Alongside the NXTPAPER launches, TCL is also introducing the K70 Series in Australia. The range includes the TCL K70 5G at AUD $329 and the TCL K70 4G at AUD $299.

Tablet push

On the tablet side, TCL is expanding NXTPAPER across three models and adding what it calls 3A Crystal Shield Glass. The glass uses anti-glare, anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint coatings intended to reduce smudging and screen reflections.

TCL says its anti-glare etching is also designed to reduce sparkle on the display and maintain more consistent brightness from different viewing angles. The tablets are being positioned for reading, study and work tasks.

The highest-priced model is the TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER at AUD $1,299, which TCL describes as its first eNote device. It has an 11.5-inch 2.2K display, a 3:2 aspect ratio, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and an 8,000mAh battery.

The device also includes the T-Pen Pro stylus, which has haptic feedback, an eraser function and a side button for tasks such as bookmarking recordings, saving screen content and organising files. The Note A1 also includes AI tools for transcription, translation and note-taking.

Below that, the TCL TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER is priced at AUD $599 and the TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER at AUD $449. The A1 Plus has a 12.2-inch 2.4K display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 10,000mAh battery, while the A1 has an 11-inch 2.1K display with a 90Hz refresh rate and an 8,000mAh battery.

Both tablets have metal unibody designs, support Extend Mode and Mirror Mode for Windows PCs, and come with a flip case and T-Pen 2. The A1 Plus includes 256GB of storage expandable up to 2TB, while the A1 includes 128GB expandable to the same level.

The broader tablet range also includes a standard-display TCL TAB A1 Plus at AUD $499 and a TCL TAB A1 Kids Edition at AUD $399. The five NXTPAPER devices form the core of TCL's latest push to bring reading-focused screens into the mainstream consumer market.
