Global technology industry deals total $34.4bn in April 2020

Total technology industry deals totalled $34.4bn for April 2020, according to new figures released by data and analyst firm GlobalData.

The value marked an increase of 33.8% over the previous month, and a drop of 21.2% when compared with the last 12-month average of $43.65bn, the company says.

In terms of the number of deals, the tech sector saw a drop of 11.8% over the last 12-month average with a total of 1308 deals against the average of 1483 deals.

According to the research, the Asia Pacific region led activity in terms of value with deals worth $26.56bn.

Technology industry deals in April 2020: Top deals
The top five technology deals accounted for 65.3% of the overall value during April 2020, GlobalData says.

The combined value of the top five technology deals stood at $22.47bn, against the overall value of $34.4bn recorded for the month.

The top five technology industry deals of April 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

  • General Atlantic Singapore Fund, Jinbo Yao, Ocean Link and Warburg Pincus Asia's $13.99bn private equity deal with 58.com
  • The $5.7bn acquisition of Jio Platforms by Facebook
  • Macquarie Group's $1.85bn acquisition of AirTrunk Operating
  • The $600.77m asset transaction with NOS SGPS by Cellnex Telecom Aprogen
  • KICs acquisition of Locojoy International for $336.9m.

Earlier this year, GlobalData research found global technology industry deals totalled $42.98bn in January 2020.

The value marked an increase of 11.9% over the previous month and a drop of 7.8% when compared with the last 12-month average of $46.59bn, the research shows.

In terms of number of deals, the sector saw a drop of 12.7% over the last 12-month average with 1295 deals against the average of 1483 deals, according to the research.

In value terms, North America led the activity with deals worth $16.77bn, GlobalData says.

Technology industry deals in January 2020: Top deals
The top five technology deals accounted for 46.9% of the overall value during January 2020.

The combined value of the top five technology deals stood at $20.16bn, against the overall value of $42.98bn recorded for the month.

According to the research, the top five technology industry deals of January 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

  • Visa's $5.3bn acquisition of Plaid Technologies
  • The $5bn private equity deal with Veeam Software by Insight Partners
  • Hitachi's $4.9bn acquisition of Hitachi High-Technologies
  • The $2.56bn acquisition of Global Blue by Far Point Acquisition
  • Saudi Telecom's acquisition of Vodafone Egypt Telecommunications for $2.39bn.
