8x8 has launched 8x8 Small Business for direct resell partners, targeting companies with fewer than 100 users in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Australia.

The product uses a self-serve, consumption-based model that removes fixed seat counts, annual licences and mandatory bundling. It includes global calling, meetings, chat, compliance, analytics, CRM integration and Microsoft Teams Phone integration, with customers charged only for the services they use.

Developed with input from its partner community, the offer is intended to give resellers another route into the small and medium business market. Partners can deploy and provision users in as little as five days and receive enablement, co-branded demand-generation materials and support from the start.

The launch reflects pressure in the communications software market to offer more flexible pricing to smaller businesses, which often resist long contracts and bundled products. For channel partners, this has made it harder to serve smaller customers while preserving margins and keeping deployment simple.

Partner model

8x8 is positioning the new offer alongside its existing partner setup rather than as a replacement. Resellers can choose between its established subscription approach and the new small business model, depending on customer needs.

The move also broadens 8x8's pitch to channel partners selling unified communications services to smaller organisations. By limiting the product to businesses with fewer than 100 users and offering self-serve procurement, 8x8 is targeting a segment where speed of setup and lower upfront commitment often shape buying decisions.

Jamie Snaddon, EMEA managing director at 8x8, outlined the thinking behind the launch in a company statement.

"Resellers want something that is flexible, supports fast provisioning, and provides the same great capabilities of an enterprise UCaaS platform," said Jamie Snaddon, EMEA managing director at 8x8.

"So we built something different. In what we believe is an industry first, we've broken out of the traditional UCaaS packaging so partners can meet customers exactly where they are, on a self-serve, flexible, and profitable basis," Snaddon said.

Early feedback

8x8 also shared comments from reseller partners that have started using the offer. They highlighted sales support, onboarding and the effect of the consumption model on day-to-day partner operations.

"The support from the 8x8 team has been outstanding," said Tony Capewell, technical director at Your Cloud Works.

"It's rare to find an enterprise-grade solution that keeps partnership mechanics simple. The consumption model and single point of sales and technical support have made a real difference for us," Capewell said.

Another partner cited onboarding and portfolio flexibility as the main advantages.

"The support we've received from all channels within 8x8 has been second to none," said John Redmond, director at Cloudline.

"8x8 simplifies the onboarding process for our customers, and flexibility of the 8x8 portfolio ensures we always have the right solutions for our clients and we in turn can scale our business," Redmond said.

SMB focus

The small business communications market remains highly fragmented, with providers competing on contract terms, ease of deployment and the ability to combine voice, messaging and meetings in a single service. Vendors are also trying to balance standardised packaging with demand from smaller customers for narrower, lower-cost product configurations.

Against that backdrop, 8x8's decision to remove fixed seat commitments and annual licensing addresses a common point of friction for resellers serving smaller accounts. It also gives the company a more distinct route into customers that may be too small or too price-sensitive for broader subscription bundles.

The launch sits within 8x8's wider communications portfolio, which includes products such as 8x8 Engage, 8x8 Contact Centre and 8x8 AI Studio. Under the partner structure, resellers will be able to assess whether customers are better suited to the conventional subscription route or the new consumption-based option.

For the channel, the significance of the launch will depend on whether flexible commercial terms translate into sustained take-up among smaller businesses. Early partner comments suggest 8x8 is trying to reduce complexity as much as price, with Redmond saying, "8x8 simplifies the onboarding process for our customers, and flexibility of the 8x8 portfolio ensures we always have the right solutions for our clients and we in turn can scale our business."
