OpenAI Codex app rollout includes Australian education pilot

Tue, 3rd Feb 2026

OpenAI has launched a new Codex app designed to support the management of multiple AI coding agents, with Australia featuring early through an education pilot that embeds the technology into undergraduate IT teaching.

Product launch

The Codex app provides a dedicated development environment for supervising AI agents working across software projects. It reflects a shift in how developers use AI tools, moving from direct interaction with a single agent to overseeing several agents running tasks in parallel. The app allows developers to assign tasks, monitor progress, review changes, and intervene when required.

The software supports long-running work that can span hours or weeks. Agents operate in separate threads organised by project, allowing developers to switch between tasks without losing context. Built-in support for isolated work environments reduces conflicts when several agents work on the same codebase.

Skills framework

Codex extends beyond code generation through a system of "skills" that connects agents with tools and workflows. Skills package instructions, scripts and resources so agents can execute tasks such as documentation, testing, information gathering and deployment. Developers can create and manage skills within the app, or allow Codex to select relevant skills automatically.

The app also supports scheduled automations. These allow repetitive or routine tasks to run in the background, with results delivered to a review queue. At OpenAI, automations are used internally for tasks such as issue triage, testing and reporting.

Australian education

In Australia, higher education and vocational provider NextEd Group will integrate Codex into its Bachelor of Information Technology. The degree is delivered through the Academy of Interactive Technology. The rollout places Codex within a core undergraduate IT curriculum rather than as an optional tool.

The integration forms part of a broader pilot that also includes the use of ChatGPT Edu licences across higher education and vocational programs. The pilot covers both domestic and international student cohorts. NextEd said the initiative is intended to familiarise students with AI-assisted development workflows they are likely to encounter in industry.

Developer uptake

OpenAI said more than one million developers used Codex in the past month. Users range from individual developers to startups and large enterprises. The company said internal teams have also relied on Codex for production work, including mobile application development carried out by a small engineering team.

Codex is positioned as a tool for managing the full software lifecycle, from design to maintenance. Its interface allows developers to inspect code changes, comment on diffs and open work in their preferred editor. Session history is shared across the app, command line tools and IDE extensions under a single account.

Availability

The Codex app is available on macOS and can be used through existing ChatGPT subscriptions, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. For a limited period, access is also being extended to Free and Go users, with higher usage limits across paid plans. Codex can be used through the desktop app, web interface, command line tools and IDE extensions.
