Addressing the ‘traditional’ gap between software development and IT operations, DevOps brings the previously arms-length relationship closer together. The word itself is a portmanteau of ‘Development’ and ‘Operations’. Conceptually, pulling these teams together makes sense; in DevOps there is an emphasis on collaboration and cooperation with a view to accelerating the delivery of better-quality software in a ‘continuous integration/continuous delivery’ (CI/CD) model. DevOps is often closely associated with the Agile methodology and is based on similar or related concepts.
