Access Group acquires ATO SmartDocs to boost automation suite

Thu, 21st Aug 2025

The Access Group has announced the acquisition of ATO SmartDocs, a cloud-based provider of automated Australian Tax Office document processing solutions.

With this acquisition, the Access Group aims to strengthen its presence in the Asia Pacific accounting software sector and expand its accounting solutions portfolio to better support regulatory compliance for accounting firms in Australia.

Market context

Accounting software for Australian firms is described as a fragmented and complex market, with many firms experiencing challenges related to compliance demands and workforce shortages. Administrative and compliance workloads have contributed to issues around staff recruitment, retention, and burnout. Automation of document processing is seen as a means to address these systemic challenges.

ATO SmartDocs, founded in 2015, developed a platform that automates workflows around Australian Tax Office documents, processing more than 1.5 million documents each year using artificial intelligence. The company integrates with a broad range of practice management systems and holds ISO27001 security accreditation, an industry-recognised standard.

Product integration

As a result of the acquisition, ATO SmartDocs capabilities will become part of the Access Group's connected suite of products, which includes HandiSoft, APS, Fathom, ChangeGPS and Elite. This will provide a more comprehensive solution for accounting practices, spanning practice management, document workflow automation, and other compliance-related tasks.

The Access Group highlights that this integration will allow firms of varying sizes to improve efficiency and offer a higher standard of service, even in a competitive market where clients expect both accuracy and timely compliance management.

Executive perspectives

"The acquisition of ATO SmartDocs represents a pivotal moment in our mission to provide Australian accounting firms with best-in-class, connected software solutions. This platform addresses specific regulatory requirements for Australian accounting firms while creating possibilities for integration with our broader business software portfolio," said Jared Baker, General Manager Access Accountants at The Access Group.

He further commented on the company's strategy for integrated software and ongoing support for open standards:

"By bringing ATO SmartDocs into our connected suite alongside HandiSoft, APS, Fathom, ChangeGPS and Elite, we're delivering on our vision of providing integrated solutions while maintaining open standards. We understand the importance of flexibility in technology choices. ATO SmartDocs will continue to maintain its existing integrations with third-party practice management systems, and we're committed to supporting open APIs and data portability standards. This enables our customers to drive profitable and sustainable growth while focusing on higher value-added services rather than manual compliance tasks that eat up time and divert attention away from driving growth."

Baker added that the acquisition seeks to address the software market's fragmentation and facilitate smoother workflows for both Access Group and ATO SmartDocs clients:

"The combination addresses the software market's fragmented nature by offering customers an integrated experience from practice management through to automated ATO communication and compliance support. Existing Access customers gain access to ATO SmartDocs' established functionality and regulatory workflows, while ATO SmartDocs clients can explore our broader product capabilities for enhanced operational efficiency."

He also reiterated the company's commitment to the local market:

"This acquisition demonstrates our commitment to serving local market needs while providing pathways to enhanced functionality through our global software portfolio."

Ron Drost, Chief Executive Officer of ATO SmartDocs, spoke about the new opportunities the acquisition presents:

"Joining The Access Group opens tremendous opportunities for our accounting firm customers to access complementary solutions that will maximise their potential. Our clients will benefit from market-leading innovation in AI technology via the Access Evo platform, opportunities to explore enhanced product capabilities and potential integration with broader business management solutions, as well as significant ongoing investment in Australian regulatory requirements."

Drost also highlighted the importance of combining local expertise with global resources:

"This partnership delivers immediate value by bringing together the benefits of a global software group with the local knowledge and expertise essential for our compliance-heavy industry. We can now offer even greater value to customers seeking integrated accounting solutions, and this combination creates a powerful platform for sustainable growth across the Australian accounting sector."

Future direction

The Access Group maintains that the acquisition reflects its belief in the fundamental role played by the accounting industry in supporting Australian SMEs. The integration of ATO SmartDocs is expected to support productivity gains, reduce costs, and facilitate the delivery of higher-value services to clients.

Baker concluded with a message to ATO SmartDocs stakeholders:

"We're passionate about empowering accounting professionals with technology that transforms their practice efficiency and client relationships. We are thrilled to welcome ATO SmartDocs' customers, partners, and team members to the Access Group and we look forward to supporting their continued success through our expanded solution offerings."
