ST Engineering wins contract for new train information system in QLD
ST Engineering's Urban Solutions business has secured a contract to provide its enhanced AGIL Passenger Information System (PIS) for 65 new six-car passenger trains in Australia. The contract is part of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP), and the project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2030.
The QTMP aims to support South East Queensland's population and economic growth, as well as cater to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project involves the design and delivery of new trains at a purpose-built manufacturing facility in Torbanlea, on the Fraser Coast. The trains will be maintained and stabled at a new rail facility in Ormeau, on the Gold Coast.
Chew Men Leong, President of Urban Solutions at ST Engineering, highlighted the significance of the contract. "In addition to strengthening our presence in Australia, this contract marks our largest international Passenger Information System win to date, showcasing our rail capabilities."
"It underscores our commitment to delivering innovative, quality and reliable rail solutions. We look forward to contributing our expertise to this transformative project in Queensland," he stated.
The enhanced AGIL PIS harnesses advanced connectivity and display technology to offer a comprehensive suite of solutions aimed at improving the passenger experience. Key features include the Train Traveller Information System, the Passenger Announcement and Communications System, and the Train-borne Wireless System. These tools aim to provide reliable and accessible travel information, enhancing journey satisfaction.
To improve accessibility and optimise passenger comfort and safety, the system will incorporate several advanced features. High-performance hearing loops will be installed in passenger areas to assist those with hearing loss by transmitting audio directly to their hearing aids and filtering out background noise for clearer audio reception.
The Automated Real-time Passenger Counting System (ARPC) will utilise advanced video analytics to provide accurate, real-time information on passenger density within train cars. This system aims to help train operators regulate train schedules dynamically, better manage passenger loading, and inform passengers on station platforms about less crowded train cars.
An onboard mobile gateway will centralise and interface with various train subsystems, transmitting data in real-time via secured 4G/5G mobile data and Wi-Fi networks to ensure smooth rail operations and maintenance.
The QTMP is a program of the Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads. Besides enhancing rail services, it aims to create a pipeline of training and development opportunities to bolster Queensland's train manufacturing industry.
