SA Power & Schneider Electric trial SF6-free technology

Schneider Electric and SA Power Networks have announced an extension to their partnership to improve grid operations through sustainable practices.

The collaboration focuses on SA Power Networks participating in a trial using Schneider Electric's SF6-free Pure Air Ring Main Unit (RMU), aimed at decarbonising its energy distribution network.

SA Power Networks serves as the primary electricity distributor for approximately 1.7 million customers in South Australia and is implementing this technology as part of its efforts to eliminate the release of harmful SF6 gas, a potent greenhouse gas traditionally used in RMUs for its superior electrical insulation properties.

The initiative is important for environmental protection, given that SF6 gas is 23,500 times more potent than CO2, posing significant environmental risks if released.

Schneider Electric's RM AirSeT technology is being trialled with the aim of maintaining operational safety and reliability without the associated risks of SF6 gas emissions. This technology uses pure air as the insulating medium, thereby preventing the significant greenhouse gas emissions associated with SF6 gas.
