MongoDB launches version 8.0 with major performance boosts
MongoDB has announced the general availability of MongoDB 8.0, which it describes as the fastest and most performant version of the database software to date. This new version promises to deliver significant enhancements in performance, scalability, resilience, and data security, aiming to support developers in creating modern applications.
According to the company, MongoDB 8.0 introduces optimised performance metrics, including a 32% boost in throughput and a more than 200% increase in the speed of time series data aggregations. These improvements are expected to help reduce infrastructure costs while maintaining high availability by distributing data up to 50 times faster and cutting single-shard cluster costs by up to 50%.
Jim Scharf, Chief Technology Officer at MongoDB, stated, "Customers across industries tell us how critical it is for their core operational database to perform well, no matter the scale. Developers have long loved building with MongoDB, so we've ensured that 8.0 kept the bar extremely high for developer usability." He added that the new version was designed to exceed the stringent requirements of customers in areas such as security, resiliency, and performance.
In addition to performance enhancements, MongoDB 8.0 expands its Queryable Encryption capabilities, offering full-lifecycle data protection. This feature enables customers to encrypt sensitive application data and store it securely while allowing for complex queries on encrypted data, thus reducing the risk of data exposure without requiring cryptographic expertise.
"As a MongoDB customer since 2022, we've loved building with MongoDB. The flexibility of the document model, MongoDB's ability to store both structured and unstructured data, and its robust scalability has made MongoDB an ideal database solution for Metaphor," said Mars Lans, co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Metaphor. "We're really excited about the capabilities that MongoDB 8.0 brings, and we look forward to building mission-critical applications with it."
Felix Horvat, Chief Technology Officer at OCELL, also highlighted the benefits seen from the new version, noting, "With MongoDB 8.0, we have seen an incredible boost in performance, with some of our queries running twice as fast as before." He pointed out that these improvements align with OCELL's commitment to resource efficiency and enhancing data processing capabilities.
MongoDB 8.0 aims to enhance scalability with faster horizontal scaling features, enabling applications to manage high volumes of data across multiple servers more efficiently. This improvement is designed to maintain consistent application performance during periods of high demand, thereby mitigating the risk of poor user experiences caused by lag or downtime.
The version also introduces improvements specifically designed for vector applications, providing the capability to manage large-scale vector data more cost-effectively through vector quantization. This enhancement allows for reduced memory usage and faster data retrieval, which MongoDB claims will support the development of search and AI applications at scale.
With over 45 architectural improvements and new features, MongoDB 8.0 is positioned as a robust solution for enterprises needing reliable, high-performance databases. The general availability of MongoDB 8.0 covers multiple deployment options, including MongoDB Atlas on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, as well as on-premises and hybrid deployments through MongoDB Enterprise Advanced.
