McInnes Wilson adopts Actionstep for cloud practice overhaul

Wed, 30th Jul 2025

McInnes Wilson, a national Australian commercial law firm, has decided to modernise its practice management by implementing a cloud-first technology system featuring Actionstep.

The firm, which employs more than 400 staff and operates from six offices around Australia, has chosen to transition from its legacy practice management solution to a platform that incorporates Actionstep alongside Elite 3E for financial management and NetDocuments for document management. This move is part of a broader digital transformation as McInnes Wilson marks its 50th year in business.

According to the firm, the adoption of a cloud-first approach is intended to increase scalability, support innovation, and improve flexibility in service delivery. The new system also aims to enhance the firm's ability to provide quality client service while adapting to a changing legal landscape.

Platform selection

The core platforms selected - Actionstep, Elite 3E, and NetDocuments - were chosen for their proven interoperability and the ability to integrate via robust APIs. Actionstep was highlighted for its workflow automation, matter and client management capabilities, and user interface.

A significant factor in the selection was Actionstep's track record of focusing on AI in practice management, which McInnes Wilson identified as supportive of improving efficiency and addressing common administrative challenges for law firms operating at a national scale.

David Hepburn, President at Actionstep, commented on the partnership with McInnes Wilson:

"At Actionstep, we're proud to be the case management platform of choice for McInnes Wilson. Their vision for a modern, scalable approach aligns perfectly with our mission to empower law firms with modern, flexible technology that gives them an advantage as the industry continues to evolve. We're excited to be a long-term partner in their journey."

Broader transformation

McInnes Wilson's adoption of a cloud-based technology ecosystem comes with support from Verlata Consulting, a Platinum Certified Implementation Partner, which is assisting with the integration of the main platforms. The firm describes the combined solution as forming a best-of-breed, cloud-native ecosystem.

Robyna May, Chief Information Officer at McInnes Wilson, explained the firm's priorities and expectations for the new system as it enters its next growth phase:

"As we evolve, we need to ensure our core financial and operational systems don't hold us back, but rather they support ongoing growth and improvement. We knew we needed a true Cloud-based SaaS ecosystem that was flexible, well-connected, and able to scale with the firm, backed by clear roadmaps to give us confidence the product would continue to evolve with us. The combination of Actionstep, Elite 3E, and NetDocuments stood out as platforms that supports that kind of growth."

She added:

"These platforms are setting the benchmark for what true cloud-native practice management tech ecosystems for national law firms should look like. Their long-term vision and continued investment give us confidence that they will keep pace with the changing needs of firms like ours. We see it as a key part of what will drive the next stage of our firm."

Next phase

The updated technology strategy at McInnes Wilson is aimed at supporting efficiency, client service, and sustained growth. The firm stated that implementing these integrated solutions would allow it to respond to evolving market requirements and client expectations as it continues to expand its operations across Australia.
