Australians with diabetes can now monitor glucose via Apple Watch

Thu, 7th Aug 2025

Australians living with diabetes are now able to use their Apple Watch to monitor glucose levels and receive alerts due to a new integration with the Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system.

The integration allows Dexcom G7 users to view their glucose levels in real time on their Apple Watch without needing to carry a smartphone or dedicated receiver.

Direct Apple Watch support

The new capability means the Dexcom G7 system can transmit readings directly to an Apple Watch, enabling users to check their glucose data and receive notifications at a glance. Users previously required a smartphone or a separate producer-supplied receiver to access this data.

Samy Saad, Senior Managing Director for Dexcom Australia and New Zealand, said that the feature would make it simpler for people living with diabetes to manage their condition during daily activities.

"The launch of the Dexcom G7 integration with Apple Watch marks an exciting step forward for Aussies living with diabetes. This milestone with leading smartwatch technology brings greater convenience, discretion, and flexibility to support people in managing their glucose levels."

The Dexcom G7 is marketed as an all-in-one wearable device. The sensor warms up in around 30 minutes and automatically sends real-time glucose readings to a compatible device. With the Apple Watch integration, alerts and glucose checks can be done directly from the wrist without requiring a phone or receiver nearby. Compatibility with Apple Watch does require a compatible smartphone to pair a new sensor initially.

Diabetes in Australia

According to diabetes advocacy organisations, almost 1.9 million Australians are currently living with diabetes, and more than 300 people are diagnosed each day. This equates to roughly one new diagnosis every five minutes. Diabetes is characterised as the fastest-growing chronic health condition in the country and is a substantial challenge for Australia's healthcare system.

Real-time glucose monitoring is considered important in reducing risks related to both high and low blood glucose levels amongst those living with diabetes, and such systems are guides alongside traditional treatment methods.

Compatibility and features

The Dexcom G7 offers integration across a range of supported devices. In addition to the new Apple Watch capability, it can work with particular insulin delivery systems like the t:slim X2 insulin pump for added management options.

Dexcom reports that its wearable approach means users do not need to rely on fingerprick tests or manual scanning for continuous blood glucose information. The Apple Watch link is being positioned as an enhancement to daily convenience and the discretion with which users can receive alerts about their glucose status.

The Dexcom G7's connectivity enables management via a range of health apps and insulin delivery devices. While not all integrations are available locally, Australian users can access direct Apple Watch support and certain pump compatibility, subject to the user's device configuration. The system is intended for people aged two years or older who require self-monitoring of blood glucose, including those with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Australian regulatory guidance for Dexcom G7 advises all users to consult their healthcare professional to determine suitability. Glucose readings from continuous monitoring systems should be confirmed with a blood glucose meter if they do not match symptoms or expectations.

The t:slim X2 insulin pump, compatible with Dexcom G7, is a portable device that provides insulin infusion via a disposable set, and contributes to the broader integrated management of diabetes for some users.

The Apple Watch integration is designed as an option to increase flexibility for those who either prefer not to or cannot carry a smartphone constantly, and may support engagement in activities such as exercise, swimming, or situations where phone use is limited.

According to Diabetes Australia, diabetes remains a significant public health concern, outpacing the rates of heart disease and cancer in growth. The capability to monitor glucose levels more conveniently may assist individuals in maintaining awareness of their health and responding proactively to expected or unexpected glucose changes.

The new integration between Dexcom G7 and Apple Watch becomes an option for Australians seeking to access glucose notifications and readings in real time, alongside existing device and delivery system compatibilities.
