Australia tackles science gender gap with new digital curriculum

Thu, 31st Jul 2025

Australia has emerged as one of the countries with the widest gender disparities in science performance, prompting calls from education experts for urgent policy intervention.

The widening gap in science achievement between genders in Australia has raised concerns, particularly as the workforce of the future becomes increasingly oriented towards technology and innovation. Strengthening science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is seen as vital for maintaining the country's global competitiveness.

In response to these challenges, Education Perfect, an educational software provider, has introduced a revised suite of science lessons, AI-supported tools, and interactive learning experiences for students in Years 7 to 10 across Australia. The offering is designed in alignment with the most recent curriculum standards that apply to all Australian educational jurisdictions.

Curriculum and assessment

The revised content incorporates feedback gathered directly from teachers, aiming to address key challenges such as declining classroom engagement. Each unit contains integrated, curriculum-aligned assessments, supplying teachers with real-time data on student progress, thereby assisting in the identification of knowledge gaps more efficiently.

The new Learning Snapshots reporting feature supplies educators with continuous insights into student achievement against specific curriculum outcomes. This system enables teachers to tailor instruction and practice materials to individual student needs as they progress through the course material.

Engagement and classroom response

On the student side, the upgraded platform now provides enhanced visuals, animated characters, and storytelling elements. These features are intended to simplify complex concepts and make them more accessible and memorable for students, even when covering particularly challenging areas of scientific study.

The early implementation phase has seen substantial engagement, with students answering over 5 million assessment questions. Teachers have responded positively, reporting favourable impacts on teaching and student learning outcomes.

"The future of STEM in Australia is in desperate need of help and this is why our reimagining of Year 7-10 Science is timely and impactful. This major revision does more than just deliver the curriculum. It empowers teachers through differentiated content, engaging characters and scenarios that bring science to life, as well as powerful assessment tools that teachers use to gain the clarity they need. This is about teachers having the insights they need and students having the drive to feel enthusiastic and confident in science."

These remarks, from Kelly Hollis, Senior Content Product Manager of Science at Education Perfect, highlight the focus on supporting both teachers and students in building confidence and engagement.

Cameron McDonald, Head Teacher of Science at Narrabeen Sports High School, said, "Education Perfect is easy to navigate and gives teachers instant access to student-specific data, alongside cohort comparisons. Teachers can quickly identify class trends, reflect on their practice, or dive into individual student progress to inform targeted support and differentiation, something that would have once required hours of manual analysis. Head Teachers can view data across cohorts and programs, making it easier to pinpoint effective strategies and focus on high-impact teaching."

Calls for action

Education experts have voiced that Australia's gender gap in science achievement is now among the largest observed internationally. They are urging policymakers to respond with targeted strategies to reduce this disparity. As future jobs continue to move towards technology-centric roles, the national emphasis on STEM proficiency is expected to play a major role in economic competitiveness and job preparedness.

The rollout of Education Perfect's revised science resources is scheduled to be completed for early Term 3, and is anticipated to further support classroom learning by enabling insight-driven teaching and differentiated learning pathways for students.
