Aus3C unveils data framework to boost Aussie cyber defences

The Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre (Aus3C), in partnership with CSIRO's Data 61 and the Australian Department of Home Affairs, has announced the development of the Voluntary Data Classification Framework (VDCF) as part of Australia's National Cybersecurity Strategy.

The VDCF aims to create a unified, standardised method for assessing and protecting data risk across multiple sectors. As part of this initiative, Aus3C is encouraging Australian businesses to join a series of free nationwide workshops scheduled for the first half of December in major Australian cities. These workshops will allow businesses to gain insights from leading cybersecurity experts and express their specific data security challenges.

Matthew Salier, Chief Executive Officer of Aus3C, discussed the issues industries face with data classification: "Industries often struggle with effectively identifying and assessing the value and sensitivity of their data, which varies significantly across sectors. This lack of a consistent framework leads to challenges in communicating data risk and implementing appropriate security measures, ultimately increasing enterprise risk."

The development of the VDCF is seen as a step towards addressing persistent industry challenges in data classification by its value and sensitivity.

With the framework set to launch by late 2025, it will help organisations identify, assess, and mitigate data risks, contributing to the enhancement of Australia's cyber resilience.

To support this effort, Aus3C is committed to aiding Australian organisations in effective cybersecurity and data protection practices. The workshops are designed to provide practical guidance and emphasize the importance of consistent, risk-aligned data protection strategies.

Salier highlighted the significance of improving Australia's cyber defences, stating: "Enhancing our nation's cyber defences is critical and all Australian businesses need to play their part in protecting our collective data security. We must equip all organisations with the necessary tools to navigate this complex environment. Our goal is to drive education and resources that empower Australian organisations to take control of their data security."

The call for participation is extended to Australian businesses from a variety of sectors. Attendees of the workshops are encouraged to network, share knowledge with peers, and gain insights from cybersecurity experts, ultimately influencing the nation's cybersecurity framework. The workshops will be held in several locations, including the University of Technology Sydney on 3rd December, University of Queensland on 4th December, NBN HQ in Melbourne on 10th December, and Aus3C's TechCentral in Adelaide on 12th December.
