MongoDB expands operations with new office in Sydney
MongoDB has announced the expansion of its operations in Australia with the inauguration of a new office in Sydney to enhance its engineering, support, and marketing functions in the region.
The company, known globally as a modern document database provider, has experienced significant growth within Australia and New Zealand, with its employee headcount rising to 220. This development has positioned the region as a vital segment of MongoDB's Asia Pacific business, which has generated over USD $220 million in annual revenue.
Among the many Australian enterprises MongoDB collaborates with are prominent names such as Canva, Macquarie Bank, Woolworths, Bendigo, and Adelaide Bank. The region also has a large, thriving community of over 70,000 developers who list MongoDB skills on LinkedIn, reflecting a growing familiarity with the company's technologies.
MongoDB plans to expand its Research and Development teams in Australia as part of its expanded investment. Presently, more than 160 technical roles, including developers and engineers, are engaged in key projects in the ANZ region.
Australia's Technical Services Engineering team is notable for its substantial experience and expertise in resolving complex challenges for MongoDB's major global clients. Additionally, product teams in the region focus on AI-driven tools and services to reduce the time and expenditure needed for modernising legacy technologies—issues that many Australian companies encounter.
Market analysis by IDC predicts that by 2025, the Database Management Systems market in Australia and New Zealand will be valued at USD $1.9 billion, with a growth rate of 17.3%. However, a significant portion of this software investment is allocated to maintaining outdated systems that complicate the development of modern use cases like AI. MongoDB is actively addressing these challenges with its innovative solutions.
An example is the Relational Migrator tool, which was developed in Sydney. This tool notably assisted Bendigo and Adelaide Bank in modernising a core banking application, reducing development time by 90% and bringing costs down to one-tenth of traditional methods.
The Australian Core Engineering team is responsible for the MongoDB server storage layer, which is central to the database's functionality and essential for millions of global users.
Simon Eid, Senior Vice President of APAC at MongoDB, said, "Legacy technology is holding back global innovation, which is why we are on a mission to eliminate roadblocks to groundbreaking technology like AI by bringing simplicity, speed and ease to the modernisation process for Australia's leading companies."
"I'm so excited about the increased investment we're making in Australia. We've now got great new facilities to support MongoDB's growing world-class teams across engineering, services, support, and go-to-market functions. MongoDB's modern, document-based architecture offers the scalability and agility businesses need to unlock AI's full potential and to lead Australia's next wave of innovation."
The new Sydney office at 201 Elizabeth Street officially opened on 12th February and is designed to support a flexible working model. The space includes flexible desks and various multi-use areas suitable for hosting events, ensuring adaptability for different work styles and requirements.
Mick Graham, Vice President of Engineering at MongoDB, said, "Databases are the backbone of modern applications—managing, storing and protecting massive volumes and varieties of data. But it's a giant technical challenge to do that at scale while offering the great developer experience MongoDB is famous for."
"The outstanding technical talent we've been able to find and develop in Australia has been absolutely crucial to the company's success and continued growth. Working on foundational technology like databases is an incredibly exciting area of development at this moment in world history. It's so gratifying to see how the teams' work is impacting thousands of customers across the world and, particularly, here in Australia."
