Epson highlights emission cuts, waste reduction & new partnerships
Epson Australia has published its second Sustainability Impact Report, outlining its achievements and ongoing work across environmental, operational and community-focused areas in Australia and New Zealand.
Emission targets
The company completed a review of its value chain emissions, setting a near-term reduction target in line with the global Science Based Targets initiative. Epson aims to cut total emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 55% by 2030. The latest review facilitates more detailed monitoring of these targets across the local business.
Epson reports all Australian and New Zealand sites now use 100% renewable electricity for operations. The relocation of its Sydney head office to North Sydney in November 2024 led to a 25% reduction in electricity usage and a 60% decrease in office footprint, while supporting hybrid working practices.
Waste management
Epson continues to address product end-of-life through product stewardship programmes. The company reported a 29% reduction in operational waste, mainly by reusing cardboard and reducing timber pallet disposal at its Sydney warehouse. More than 21 tonnes of used printer cartridges were collected and recycled through the Cartridge 4 Planet Ark programme, which aims to ensure zero landfill waste from these consumables.
Community engagement
The report includes details of corporate partnerships, in-kind contributions and employee volunteering. Since the release of its previous Sustainability Impact Report, Epson employees have contributed 168 hours of staff time to community and social initiatives.
Industry partnerships
During the reporting period, Epson Australia collaborated with the Australian Fashion Council and RMIT University to co-launch the Victorian Textile, Clothing and Footwear Manufacturing Report. This document sets out a roadmap for the industry with strategies to boost productivity, reduce waste and enhance sustainability through technology. Epson continues to promote on-demand printing technologies to support local fashion manufacturers in making their operations more resource-efficient.
The company plans to maintain transparency and engagement around its sustainability progress, aligning its local efforts with international benchmarks and local priorities. Its initiatives extend from energy and waste reduction to broader partnerships in the business and community sectors.
"This second Sustainability Impact Report shows the progress we've made and also the ambition that drives us in the area of sustainability. It details how we work with our global teams, customers and partners to turn challenges into opportunities, guided by our company purpose and values. It also demonstrates how we are moving forward with energy, motivated by the impact of every action, large and small," said Craig Heckenberg, Managing Director, Epson Australia and New Zealand.
