AI Image Equity Challenge spotlights women in tech sector
Women in ICT has launched the AI Image Equity Challenge to address the representation of women within the technology industry and to encourage broader participation by inviting people to create AI-generated images spotlighting the stories of women in technology.
The non-profit organisation, which focuses on advancing women and girls in information and communication technology, is using this initiative to tackle stereotypes and foster confidence among women engaging with artificial intelligence.
Challenge overview
The AI Image Equity Challenge encourages entrants to create original images using artificial intelligence, reflecting the diversity and realities of women in the technology sector. Submissions must also include a brief narrative or a 30-second video describing the woman or women represented and the reasons behind the choice.
Participants are required to disclose the AI tools, prompts, algorithms and any source materials employed. The challenge aims to promote ethical and responsible practices in the use of AI-generated art, prioritising transparency, inclusivity and intellectual property rights.
"Tech has an image problem, and we all know that you can't be what you can't see," said WIC President Josephine Calabria.
"As AI continues to evolve, it's essential that women aren't just part of the conversation but leading it – especially when it comes to shaping how the technology is applied and understood. We're introducing a fun, creative way to spark interest and encourage more women to get involved."
According to the organisation, the challenge is designed to increase visibility for women in the sector as well as challenge ongoing stereotypes about who works in technology and what their contributions look like.
Judging and prizes
WIC board members will evaluate submissions for the challenge alongside leaders from the art and technology sectors, including Walkley Award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster Tracey Spicer AM. Judging criteria are divided into four categories of equal weight: representation and creativity, impact and storytelling, technical execution and quality, and ethical and responsible use of AI.
Prizes on offer include an Eizo FlexScan EV2460 monitor valued at AUD $560, donated by challenge sponsors. Winners will be announced in September, following the closing of entries on 10 August.
Ethics and representation
The challenge stipulates that participants must create original works that reflect diversity in all its forms and showcase the empowerment of women and girls in the technology sector. All entries are expected to adhere to copyright and legal standards, with a strong emphasis on transparency and the responsible disclosure of all tools and materials used in the creative process.
By prioritising these ethical considerations, WIC aims to ensure that the contest upholds values of transparency and inclusivity, both in terms of visual storytelling and in the application of AI.
Ongoing efforts
The AI Image Equity Challenge forms part of WIC's broader mission to address gender equity challenges in the technology sector. In addition to its awards and events, the Canberra-based organisation runs a Work Experience Connection Program, aiming to introduce more girls and gender diverse students to the study of ICT. The programme partners with host organisations such as the Australian Federal Police and Microsoft.
The organisation views its current initiative as a crucial step in reshaping perceptions and expectations within the ICT industry. By combining creative expression with responsible AI practices, Women in ICT intends to foster a technology sector that is both more inclusive and accurately representative of the people it serves.
