Orbbec unveils innovative 3D camera Gemini 2 XL at 2024 CES
Fri, 5th Jan 2024

During this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Orbbec, a dedicated industry leader in 3D vision systems, publicised the launch of its innovative Gemini 2 XL. The brand new, long-range, 3D camera, which offers consistent data accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions, is geared towards AI-based vision developers seeking an affordable panoramic RGB-D Power over Ethernet (PoE) camera capable of superior performance.

The Gemini 2 XL is a significant leap forward in the field of robotic vision. Aimed at addressing the demand for affordable, high-quality visual information in AI-based video analytics and interaction systems, the camera is easy to set up and operate with the Orbbec Software Development Kit (SDK).

The distinctive features of the newly released camera help it outperform similar products in the market. These include superior RGB-D quality, enabling the detection of small objects even in high-reflectivity environments, and minimal environmental light impact, offering outstanding performance in various lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight or low-visibility conditions.

Orbbec's AI-driven algorithms overcome the challenges posed by traditional ones, such as shadow, speckle pattern size, and illumination conditions, to deliver a complete phase map output around small objects and fixtures. David Chen, Co-Founder and Head of Products at Orbbec, said, "As Orbbec’s learning library continues to expand, the camera's capabilities will continue to improve, broadening their applicability in robotics and AI-based vision solutions."

Serving as a cost-efficient alternative to similar, more expensive cameras requiring external computing power, the high-performing Gemini 2 XL eliminates the need for costly vision processors. The Gemini 2 XL, through the integration of the NVIDIA Jetson Orin system-on-modules instead of the OBox, also allows additional image processing, thereby facilitating improved depth frame rate, accuracy, and scene versatility.

Customers interested in custom applications can benefit from Orbbec's R&D expertise, in-house manufacturing, and supply chain. The optimised deep learning pipeline and camera calibration service will be offered as part of Orbbec's Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) package. Importantly, clients will be able to customise the AI depth output and re-train the model with their own datasets through Orbbec's ODM services engagement, achieving better performance under their specific application environment.

Robotics developers, enthusiasts and media alike interested in the Gemini 2 XL are welcomed to visit Orbbec's booth at the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center (LVCC) during CES. Orbbec's commitment remains unswerving: to popularise 3D vision technology, create a full-stack platform for industry solution developers and build smart products with superior performance at an affordable price.
