LG achieves Level 3 cybersecurity certification for cars

Mon, 9th Dec 2024

LG Electronics has achieved Level 3 Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS) certification from TÜV Rheinland, reflecting the automotive industry's ongoing focus on digital security.

LG Electronics has furthered its cybersecurity efforts in its automotive technologies, strengthening its stance as a significant tier-1 mobility solution supplier. The company recently acquired the Level 3 CSMS certification from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing and certification agency. Recognised as the highest level, this certification underscores LG's dedication to maintaining security during product development, manufacturing, and real-world application.

The Level 3 CSMS certification verifies compliance with the ISO/SAE 21434 standard and UN R155 regulation, compulsory for automakers across 56 global markets. The certification process includes thorough evaluations, such as simulated cyberattacks aimed at identifying vulnerabilities in security measures and processes. LG's progress from Level 2 to Level 3 demonstrates its commitment to satisfying ever-stricter cybersecurity standards, achieved through extensive testing of both its CSMS standard and its manufactured products.

LG's adherence to the Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination framework, known as Automotive SPICE® (ASPICE), aligns with industry best practices. ASPICE, developed by the Automotive Special Interest Group including several renowned European automakers, offers a methodical approach to assessing and enhancing vehicle software development processes. LG has been recognised for its application of ASPICE for Cybersecurity, an ASPICE extension encompassing several additional cybersecurity evaluations.

As the automotive industry shifts toward software-defined vehicles, LG remains proactive in tackling emerging cybersecurity challenges. Alongside obtaining globally recognised certifications like CSMS and embracing the ASPICE framework, LG has bolstered its capabilities through strategic measures, such as the acquisition of Cybellum, an Israeli automotive cybersecurity company, in 2021.

Eun Seok-hyun, President of LG Vehicle Solution Company, stated, "LG is at the forefront of employing cutting-edge security technologies and processes to deliver safer and more reliable solutions for automakers and end users. We will continue to refine our security systems to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated cyberthreats targeting the mobility sector."
