Australians embrace AI home devices, prioritise energy efficiency

Mon, 9th Sep 2024

Samsung Electronics Australia has released the Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition, highlighting a significant generational shift in the perception and use of home appliances. Findings reveal that 75% of consumers view artificial intelligence (AI) as an unparalleled innovation, and 70% believe it will unlock limitless possibilities.

The report indicates that over half of Australians (57%) wish to connect their appliances with other devices, and 47% prioritise AI-enabled features. Commenting on the findings, Jeremy Senior, Vice President - Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics Australia, stated, "Our Samsung Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition reveals Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge in redefining what it means to own and showcase home appliances. These insights demonstrate a clear generational divide. While energy savings are crucial for everyone, younger generations prioritise sleek design and smart AI functionality."

Senior emphasised Samsung's long-standing focus on intelligent connectivity and customisation in their appliances, noting, "At Samsung, we've been building intelligent connectivity and customisation into our appliances for over a decade to bring meaningful value to Australian lives. Through innovation, we're able to offer all Australians appliances that can adapt, and increasingly learn individual preferences, to offer experiences that suit their unique lifestyles and meet their needs in a way that makes them proud."

The report uncovers a trend towards what some are calling "appliance envy". A quarter of Australians feel judged by inconsistent or outdated appliances, while over a third (34%) of Gen Z believe having a high-end fridge is key to hosting a successful party. Senior added, "The best examples of AI integration bring meaningful value and ultimately simplify Australians' busy lives. Whether it's AI-powered washing machines, fridges, or vacuum cleaners, Australians can quickly spot gimmicks and prefer technology that has a real, tangible impact."

Specific products highlighted in the Samsung lineup include an AI-powered built-in oven that recognises ingredients and recommends recipes, alongside a Family Hub refrigerator with an AI Vision Inside feature capable of identifying up to 33 types of fresh food. Additionally, the Bespoke Heat Pump Combo features an AI Energy Mode that claims to reduce energy consumption by 65% during wash cycles and 20% during dry cycles.

As Australians grapple with rising cost-of-living pressures, the practical elements of appliances are increasingly important. Practicality, combined with aesthetics, has led to the emergence of a new category of high-value appliances. The report finds that 51% of Australians consider high energy consumption the most frustrating appliance issue, with 94% making energy-saving changes at home. The report further illustrates that despite differences in aesthetic preferences, energy efficiency remains a universal concern.

Samsung's SmartThings app, which connects appliances and allows them to interact, is highlighted for its role in bridging the gap between aesthetics and practicality. The app aims to help users manage energy consumption efficiently, promoting sustainable practices in the home. Senior stated, "Consumers are turning to smart, connected devices that save time and energy. Appliances like Samsung's Bespoke AI Heat Pump combo can help address Australians' number one appliance gripe - high energy consumption. Consuming up to 60% less energy with AI Energy Mode during the wash cycle and 20% less during the dry cycle, the range offers a smart, efficient choice for those looking to maximise potential savings on energy costs while maintaining a stylish and efficient home."

The presence of AI in home devices is growing, with a rising appetite for smart technology among Australians. Nearly half of Australians (47%) consider AI-enabled features a priority in new appliances, with Gen Z particularly pushing the boundaries of what is expected from home appliances. Samsung aims to continue innovating to meet this demand, providing solutions that reshape industry standards. In conclusion, Jeremy Senior noted, "Samsung is invigorated by Australian consumers' appetite for stylish, connected, and customisable appliances, and looks forward to continuing to provide solutions that reshape industry standards."
