Amber Electric partners with Gentrack to boost power innovation
Amber Electric has deployed Gentrack's g2.0 platform on AWS, integrating the system with Amber's real-time, behind-the-meter energy management technology.
Amber Electric focuses on providing households across Australia with direct access to wholesale electricity markets, enabling them to manage energy resources such as solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles in real time. With Australia holding a leading global position in home solar adoption, this integration aims to improve customers' ability to utilise and derive value from renewable energy technology.
Gentrack's g2.0 platform replaces Amber Electric's previous systems as part of a strategy to enhance scalability and operational efficiency in the retailer's business. The migration introduces a platform supporting dynamic pricing models, allowing for rapid deployment of new services and improvements in customer experience.
The Meter Data Services (MDS) component of Gentrack's platform underpins Amber Electric's wholesale energy model. By processing complex Time-of-Use tariffs and interfacing directly with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the platform enables Amber Electric to collect and manage detailed usage data. Customers receive all network-related costs at wholesale rates—with Amber applying a fixed subscription fee—which incorporates metering, environmental, maintenance, and tariff-specific charges.
In addition, Gentrack's Data and Analytics platform provides a data pipeline that transfers relevant datasets into Amber Electric's environment. This supports the retailer's mobile applications and internal analytics, contributing to the efficient operation of its technology stack.
The collaboration between Gentrack and Amber Electric was strengthened by a strategic partnership initiated in early 2024, which included Gentrack's investment in Amber as part of a Series C funding round.
Integration of Gentrack's g2.0 platform with Amber's proprietary SmartShift technology gives Amber Electric a foundation to further scale its retail operations in Australia. The company also intends to expand globally as a technology provider, offering SmartShift to international markets and aiming to support other utilities in their energy transition efforts.
Chris Thompson, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Amber Electric, said: "Upgrading to g2.0 has been a critical step in scaling Amber and delivering a better experience for our customers. It gives us the flexibility to move faster, launch new products, and support the dynamic pricing model that sets Amber apart. Legacy systems just aren't built for this kind of innovation, but with Gentrack, we're equipped for the future.
"The mission has always been to give our customers access to the value of renewables and smart energy technology. With Gentrack's platform, we have the tools to expand that impact, and to keep building a better energy future as the system evolves."
Gary Miles, Chief Executive Officer of Gentrack, commented: "Gentrack's mission is to accelerate the world towards a net-zero future by leading the global modernisation of energy retailers. Amber is a standout example of the new wave of energy retailers reshaping the future of green energy in Australia. What's particularly exciting is the traction their technology is now getting across Europe—with new wins and a strong pipeline, it's clear their model has global relevance."
Amber Electric's approach allows households to earn wholesale market rates for excess energy exported to the grid from home batteries and EVs, while automating their use of cheaper, renewable energy when available. This model is aligned with the company's goal of supporting a transition to 100% renewable energy usage.
By integrating scalable cloud-based technology, Amber Electric and Gentrack are responding to rapid changes in the residential energy sector, where digital management of home energy assets, real-time pricing, and consumer engagement are increasingly important. Amber Electric's ongoing global expansion is intended to help utilities worldwide accelerate their sustainable energy goals through greater engagement with households and more sophisticated energy management technology.
