Veeam enterprise push gains further strength with Magic Quadrant leadership ranking
Mon, 7th Aug 2017
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Veeam Software's enterprise push has received another boost, with the vendor ranked as a Leader in Gartner's latest Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions.

Veeam is positioned alongside Dell EMC, Commvault, IBM and Veritas in the leaders quadrant. It is Veeam's second consecutive year as a leader in the Magic Quadrant.

Nathan Steiner, Veeam ANZ head of systems engineering, says the Magic Quadrant ranking is ‘the latest recognition of our rapid growth in the top end of town, where our multi-cloud offerings are winning broad customer adoption'.

“While we have dominated the SMB market for years, we are now gratified to see our latest product versions acknowledged as best-in-class by enterprise customers in head-to-head competition for deals,” Steiner says.

“We are immensely proud of this result because the Magic Quadrant is a key part of the enterprise evaluation process and the go-to resource for our enterprise customers across the globe,” he says.

Gartner says Veeam has become the fourth-largest backup vendor, based on 2016 revenue, and is ‘frequently' showing up on vendor shortlists for backup software.

“For the last several years Veeam has been – and continues to be – one of the fastest-growing companies in the backup industry,” Gartner says.

The Magic Quadrant says Veeam offers rich functionality and many simple recovery options or the VMware and Hyper-V environment and continues to stand out with numerous agentless VM recovery options and ‘unique functions to overcome hypervisor-native limitations'.

“Over the years it has added data center functions, such as tape support and storage snapshot integration, as well as integration with key deduplication backup target appliances to improve storage efficiency,” Gartner says.

“Customers and references have favourable comments on ease of management.

“Roadmap items before the end of 2017 include converged management and virtual physical server backup and NAS backup,” the Magic Quadrant notes.

However, it also notes that Veeam's pricing has become less competitive and less flexible than some key competitors and that the vendor ‘has only just begun officially supporting physical server environments and has yet to fully integrate or prove these capabilities'.

The company recently announced its 36th consecutive quarter of double digit growth, with 27% year on year growth in total global bookings for Q2 2017 and a whopping 60% year on year growth in total revenue booking in ANZ.

Actifio and new entrant Rubrik were ranked as visionaries in the magic quadrant, with Unitrends, HPE an Arcserve making it into the niche players category. No companies were listed in the challengers segment.
