Tanvi Mehta Krensel joins Squire Patton Boggs in Sydney role

Today

Tanvi Mehta Krensel has joined Squire Patton Boggs as a partner in its Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets Practice Group in Sydney.

Mehta Krensel moves to the firm from TikTok in Sydney, where she held the position of Product Privacy Lead for the Asia Pacific and Emerging Markets. Her professional experience also includes time at Allens as well as several years working in the United Kingdom.

Growing need for data expertise

The background to Mehta Krensel's appointment is a period of significant change in Australia's privacy laws, with ongoing reforms making legal expertise in this area increasingly essential. Alan L. Friel, Chair of the Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets Practice at Squire Patton Boggs, highlighted her experience and capabilities, stating:

"Ongoing efforts at significant privacy law reforms in Australia mean that expertise in this area is highly sought after. Having spent several years working in the UK and also having advised on key Asian-Pacific jurisdictions during her time at TikTok, Tanvi has a genuinely cross-border perspective on data protection and regulatory requirements in the UK, EU, APAC and Australia. Her experience not only in data privacy and cybersecurity, but AI, IT transactions and digital transformation will fit well with the scope of our Data Practice and will serve our clients' needs throughout the APAC region."

Mehta Krensel's work at TikTok involved advice on privacy, e-marketing, child safety and artificial intelligence laws for a range of countries, including Australia, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Vietnam. In addition to her knowledge of regulatory requirements across the Asia Pacific region, while based in the United Kingdom she advised clients in both the UK and Australia on the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to business operations.

Practice focus and local impact

Her practice covers data protection and commercialisation, cybersecurity, technology-driven innovation, procurement, and other regulatory matters, building on substantial expertise developed in IT contracting and technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT). She also brings significant experience managing data security incident response.

Graeme Slattery, Sydney Office Managing Partner, commented on the benefits Mehta Krensel brings to the Sydney team and to the firm's Australian client base. Slattery said:

"Tanvi's experience and connections will be valuable to the development of our offering in Australia in areas of privacy and cybersecurity, as well as extending our services to corporate clients looking for support with transactions and asset management."

Client service and global reach

Squire Patton Boggs' Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets Practice comprises more than 65 lawyers in 14 countries. The firm is recognised by legal industry rankings, including an "Elite" ranking by Lexology's Global Data Review, underscoring the size and breadth of its data law practice worldwide.

On her new role, Mehta Krensel expressed anticipation at working with her new colleagues and further developing the firm's data privacy practice in Australia. She stated:

"I am excited to join Squire Patton Boggs. With its sophisticated and truly global data privacy practice, I am looking forward to developing the firm's capability in Australia as well as working closely with my new colleagues around the world on cross-border projects."

Mehta Krensel's role at Squire Patton Boggs is expected to focus on supporting clients with increasing demands in data protection, regulatory compliance, and digital transformation projects around Asia Pacific and globally.
