SeqOIA adopts Scality RING to enhance genomics sequencing
Scality has announced that its RING distributed file and object storage solution has been adopted by SeqOIA, one of France's key genomics sequencing laboratories. This deployment aims to optimise and accelerate the data lifecycle for SeqOIA Médicine Génomique, which is integrating whole genome sequencing into the French healthcare system to improve outcomes for patients with rare diseases and cancer.
The SeqOIA laboratory is part of the France Médecine Génomique 2025 initiative, and it utilises Scality RING to aggregate petabyte-scale genetic data. This data is crucial for better characterisation of pathologies and for guiding genetic counselling and patient treatment. The RING solution grants SeqOIA biologists efficient access to nearly 10 petabytes of data on thousands of compute nodes, providing accelerated data access speeds at a cost significantly lower than all-flash file storage.
Alban Lermine, IS and Bioinformatics Director of SeqOIA, commented on the deployment, stating, "RING is the repository for 90% of our genomics data pipeline, and we see a need for continued growth on it for years to come. In collaboration with Scality, we have solved our analytics processing needs through a two-tier storage solution, with all-flash access for temporary hot data sets and long-term persistent storage in RING. We trust RING to protect the petabytes of mission-critical data that enable us to carry out our mission of improving care for patients suffering from cancer and other diseases."
Scality RING has also been deployed in other data-intensive industries, including healthcare, financial services, and travel services. A notable example is a large publicly held personal line insurance provider in the United States that selected RING as the AI-data lake repository for its insurance analytics claim processing. The provider chose RING to replace its Hadoop File System (HDFS), resulting in improved space efficiency, cost savings and higher availability through a multi-site deployment that supports site failover.
In the travel sector, a multinational IT services company uses Scality RING to support its global travel and tourism operations. The company relies on RING to handle one petabyte of new log data ingestion daily, maintaining a 14-day rotating data lake. The solution facilitates simultaneous purging of the oldest data and read access for analysis at tens of gigabytes per second from a cluster of Splunk indexers.
These organisations benefit from Scality's ability to deliver performance and data protection at a petabyte scale. For AI workload processing, RING repositories are paired with all-flash file systems and leading AI tools and analytics applications, including Weka.io, HPE Pachyderm, Cribl, Cloudera, Splunk, Elastic, Dremio, and Starburst. Scality's strategic partnerships with HPE and HPE GreenLake allow for the delivery of managed AI data lakes.
Scality RING provides cost savings with a 366% five-year ROI, optimal price/performance through the use of flash and HDD, and comprehensive cyber-resiliency with its CORE5 end-to-end protections. According to Alban Lermine, "Selecting RING was the best decision for us at SeqOIA. The technology provides the complete package of features for AI-powered data lakes. RING is the most secure, scalable, and cost-effective repository for petabyte-scale unstructured data on the market."
Scality RING's support for AI includes capabilities for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) access from retrieval and generative-based AI models. It also offers integrated hybrid-cloud capabilities, enabling data replication and tiering to external public cloud services for integration with popular AI tools in AWS, Azure, and Google.
These capabilities provide organisations with a trusted data lake storage solution for various stages of data processing, from collection to analysis and model development. This enables high-performance and secure data storage at an economical price point for long-term AI data needs.
