Rachael Hedges shares insights on thriving in tech world

Rachael Hedges, Managing Director of Versed, shared her insights on navigating the tech industry as a woman, drawing from her experiences which began during her years at Massey University in the mid-2000s.

Reflecting on her academic journey, Hedges highlighted her foundational double major in Information Systems and Communication Management. "My academic background—a double major in Information Systems and Communication Management—was not just a fusion of disciplines, but the foundation upon which I built my career," she stated.

Throughout her early career, Hedges often found herself the only woman in meetings. "I remember sitting through meetings where I sometimes felt my contributions were overlooked, not because my ideas lacked merit, but simply because I didn't fit the mould," she recalled. This encouraged her to improve her communication and presentation skills.

A significant milestone in her career came when she delivered a keynote speech at a major technology conference in Las Vegas. "Being one of the few women speakers on stage set me apart and opened doors to further opportunities," Hedges shared, adding that the experience reinforced her belief in standing out as an asset.

Hedges emphasised that success in the tech industry is about impact rather than identity. "When you focus on delivering measurable outcomes through clear, strategic communication, your ideas speak for themselves—regardless of who you are," she explained.

Despite facing challenges, Hedges found these experiences instrumental in teaching adaptability and leveraging strengths. "Ultimately, what drove me was the determination to be confident, articulate, and thoroughly prepared—traits that eventually earn respect in any setting," she noted.

She advises those in similar environments to invest in personal and professional development, focusing on expertise and communication skills. "When you know your material and master your craft, respect comes not because of your gender but because of the tangible value you deliver," she advised.

Hedges concluded by acknowledging International Women's Day as a time to reflect on progress towards inclusivity. "Thriving in tech is about harnessing our unique strengths to drive success," she said, expressing pride in her accomplishments and encouraging others to challenge conventions and seize opportunities.
