Oracle adds xAI Grok models to boost its enterprise AI cloud

Today

Oracle has announced the addition of xAI's Grok models to its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Generative AI service, enabling enterprise customers to utilise advanced reasoning and multimodal artificial intelligence for a range of practical applications, from content creation and business process automation to research.

This global partnership expands Oracle's portfolio of integrated AI models, which already includes those from OpenAI and Meta's Llama, positioning Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) as a multi-model platform for generative AI at enterprise scale.

Model integration

xAI's Grok models will be available to customers via OCI Generative AI service. The collaboration will see Grok models powered by OCI's AI infrastructure, making use of OCI Compute instances, which the company states offer significant price-performance advantages and scalability options.

xAI will also train and run inferencing for future iterations of its Grok models using Oracle's infrastructure. Grok 3, xAI's latest model, is designed for high performance in mathematics, coding, and universal understanding, built with large-scale reinforcement learning and refined reasoning capabilities.

Grok 3 represents a leap forward in AI capabilities and Oracle's advanced data platform will accelerate its impact on enterprises. This collaboration between xAI and Oracle is set to redefine enterprise-grade AI.

The partnership is aimed at bolstering strong data governance, management, and security for organisations using the models. xAI models integrated with Oracle Cloud benefit from OCI's enterprise-grade capabilities, and all data sent by Oracle to Grok models is processed over zero data retention endpoints, which offers an additional layer of data protection for enterprise users.

Enterprise focus

Greg Pavlik, Executive Vice President of AI and Data Management Services at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, commented on the expanded offering and Oracle's strategy:

By bringing xAI's cutting-edge Grok models to our customers, we are expanding the possibilities of AI in the enterprise. This partnership underscores our commitment to providing the most advanced AI solutions, giving organizations greater choice and flexibility in deploying the latest AI technologies.

Oracle states that its approach brings AI technologies close to enterprise data, with an emphasis on security, adaptability, and scalability across industries. Its infrastructure includes bare metal GPU instances, supporting applications in generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, and recommendation systems.

Thousands of AI practitioners are reported to be using OCI's cost-effective, purpose-built capabilities for running AI workloads with demanding performance requirements.

Customer perspectives

Windstream, a telecommunications service provider, is exploring how xAI's multimodal models could be used via OCI to enhance business processes and support its workforce more efficiently.

In the fast-paced and ever-evolving landscape of telecommunications, there's no shortage of ways AI can benefit our business. We think there could be real advantages to leveraging Grok models via OCI Generative AI service, integrating language comprehension and reasoning to propose meaningful actions.

Security and governance

According to Oracle, the integration ensures that organisations have options for robust data governance and strong data management. This is addressed by processing all customer data on zero data retention endpoints when using Grok models through the Oracle Cloud.

Background and outlook

xAI, which was founded in March 2023, is focused on the development of foundation models that extend human understanding. The company's Grok series of models are described as capable of leveraging reinforcement learning for superior reasoning and problem-solving.

Oracle continues to integrate generative and agentic AI models from multiple creators, positioning OCI as an enterprise-grade platform designed to support a variety of business scenarios and immediate results for clients utilising artificial intelligence.
