Nexxtap & Samsung launch Tap to Phone for seamless payments
Nexxtap has announced a partnership with Samsung to deploy Tap to Phone payment solutions at a major Australian telecommunications provider's innovation hub.
The collaboration brings Nexxtap's SoftPOS technology to Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 Pro tablets, enabling businesses to accept contactless payments directly on rugged, enterprise-grade devices. According to Nexxtap, this eliminates the need for traditional payment terminals and additional hardware such as dongles.
Contactless payments in practice
Within the innovation hub, Bluestone Espresso Bar is utilising the Samsung tablets equipped with Nexxtap's embedded payment solution. Customers can pay for their purchases using cards, watches, or smartphones directly at the point of sale, offering a streamlined experience that eliminates the need for conventional terminals.
At the same time, Nexxtap developed a custom Kitchen Display System (KDS) that links payments to kitchen operations, so when a customer taps to pay, the order is immediately transmitted to the kitchen in what Nexxtap describes as a "tap-to-ticket" process. This, the company claims, has enabled staff to focus on service while reducing the likelihood of errors and enhancing operational efficiency.
Explaining the approach, Yohan Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Nexxtap, said,
"This is more than a demo. It's a glimpse into how frictionless payments can reshape business operations. Our software transforms smart devices into a payment powerhouse, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware. Together with Samsung, we're collaborating to build products for the now"
Technical integration
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 Pro is central to the deployment, offering NFC capability and a rugged build suitable for high-demand environments. This specification, combined with Nexxtap's software, enables businesses across various sectors to process payments in locations such as cafés, construction sites, or offices using just a tablet.
The SoftPOS system operates on Android 11 and later devices with NFC and adheres to PCI compliance requirements. This, according to Nexxtap, provides what it terms "military style security" and flexibility for a wide variety of business users. The service is provided at a 1.25% flat rate, with unlimited scalability and without dependency on additional proprietary hardware.
Application across industries
Nexxtap and Samsung are positioning the collaboration to address several use cases, including providing mobile payment facilities for tradespeople and field workers, as well as supporting pop-up retail events and quick-service restaurants. Other potential customers include enterprise teams handling payments in the field, retail outlets integrating payments with logistics, and event operators who need rapid mobile transactions at venues or festivals.
Nexxtap said the technology suits various business models, including independent tradespeople, cafés, and corporate operations, through its software-driven, hardware-free approach.
Wider potential
The company stated the current deployment is an initial step, and both Nexxtap and Samsung plan to expand the concept to further industries and use cases in Australia. Nexxtap intends to continue developing solutions to simplify payments and decrease operational friction for businesses.
The integration at the innovation hub remains active, and according to Nexxtap, it has strengthened the Bluestone Espresso Bar's relationship with the major telco by providing a more integrated ordering and payment experience.
