Macquarie Data Centres advances AUD $350m Sydney AI facility

Wed, 3rd Dec 2025

Macquarie Data Centres has hit a major construction milestone on its $350 million IC3 Super West facility, completing the structural phase of what will be Sydney's only new AI-ready data centre in the north zone in 2026.

The 47-megawatt build, located in the Macquarie Park Data Centre Campus, is slated to open September 2026 and is central to the company's push to add roughly 200MW of new AI and cloud capacity across the region.

New South Wales Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the project underscores the state's commitment to accelerating high-tech infrastructure:
"Companies like Macquarie Data Centres keep investing, keep expanding, and keep believing that NSW can be a global home for high-tech infrastructure… AI capability will expand because this building exists. And NSW will be more competitive - globally competitive - because this building exists."

Sydney's next AI-capacity engine

IC3 Super West is positioned to become a critical node in Australia's AI build-out.

With all required power already secured, the site will be the only data centre delivering new AI capacity in Sydney's north next year. Ballooning demand for GPU-driven and high-performance computing workloads from hyperscalers and enterprise customers is driving the expansion.

The facility will support both air and liquid cooling, including direct-to-chip systems for high-density AI deployments. Phase one delivers the main structure, core build, and an initial 6MW of fitted-out IT load.

Government push meets private-sector demand

The project arrives amid fresh state and federal momentum for digital infrastructure. NSW recently launched its Investment Delivery Authority to prioritise technology-critical builds, while the Federal Government's new National AI Plan is expected to accelerate investment in sovereign data storage and processing capacity.

Job and industry impact

More than 2,400 jobs across construction, design and fit-out are supported by the IC3 Super West development.

The Macquarie Park campus already houses key federal government and commercial workloads, reinforcing the demand for domestically operated, security-certified cloud and AI facilities as global data requirements escalate.

A broader expansion strategy

Macquarie Data Centres continues to scale its investment footprint, recently announcing plans for a separate 150MW project. The company operates three campuses across Sydney and Canberra.

David Hirst, Group Executive at Macquarie Data Centres, said the milestone marks a pivotal moment for Australia's AI capacity:
"IC3 Super West is purpose-built for the high-density power and liquid cooling demands of new AI technology. Demand for high-density AI infrastructure is the most significant megatrend we've seen in over 25 years in the data centre industry. Sovereign data centres keep Australia competitive in the global market and are the foundation of our AI future."
