Genetec & Western Sydney University launch five-year internship

Today

Genetec has entered into a five-year partnership with Western Sydney University to offer internships for full-time students, aiming to provide practical experience in the technology sector.

The program is based at the Genetec Sydney Experience Centre, located in Sydney's Tech Central Hub, and gives students exposure to multiple departments within the company, including Marketing, Channel Sales, Sales Engineering, and Technology Support.

Each intern is matched with a mentor to support their development and provide guidance throughout their placement.

"By providing meaningful opportunities, robust training, and a strong sense of community, we aim to empower the next generation of talent to reach their full potential," said George Moawad, Country Manager for Oceania at Genetec.

"We're excited to collaborate with Western Sydney University to play a role in developing and boosting Australia's digital skills capability. Real-world immersion will give the students the opportunity to develop the 'skills' necessary to succeed in the workplace."

The initiative follows warnings from the Australian Computer Society (ACS) that the nation faces a critical shortage of technology professionals. The ACS 2024 Digital Pulse Report forecast that Australia is unlikely to meet the industry's need for 1.3 million tech workers by 2030, and noted a decline in enrolments in IT courses. At the time of the report's release last October, ACS President Helen McHugh commented: "The tenth edition of the Digital Pulse serves as a wake-up call for the challenges we must address head-on."

Western Sydney University said the collaboration with Genetec will help equip students with essential workplace skills and support long-term career development.

"Western Sydney University's educational approach and course structure aligns with contemporary industry needs and are designed to develop entrepreneurial leaders and innovative thinkers who are equipped to succeed," said Hind Benbya, Dean of the School of Business at Western Sydney University.

"Collaboration between the government, with private sector companies such as Genetec, and educators is essential to up-skill today's workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. We look forward to working with Genetec to empower Australian students with workplace skills to succeed in the digital economy."

Genetec has already begun hosting interns under the new scheme, with the first intake having started in March 2025. The program will run two intakes each year – in March and July – offering students the opportunity to gain direct experience in a fast-evolving industry environment.

In 2024, Genetec welcomed nearly 400 interns across its global offices, offering immersive training that mirrors the experience of full-time employment.

The company says the initiative reflects its broader commitment to developing talent and supporting the growth of the technology workforce.

Students interested in applying are encouraged to contact their Western Sydney University course advisors for further information.
