FedEx introduces dynamic pallet dimensioning system in Australia
FedEx has announced the introduction of its Dynamic Drive-through Pallet (DTP) Dimensioning Systems in Australia, marking the first deployment of this technology outside the United States within the company's global network.
This new system is expected to significantly enhance the pallet dimensioning process in the region, bringing improvements in efficiency and accuracy to FedEx's operations.
The newly built FedEx facility in Adelaide, South Australia, is the first to implement the Drive Through Pallet system in Australia. The implementation at this facility aims to support the increasing demands of e-commerce in the South Australia region.
According to FedEx, the DTP system has more than doubled its handling speed, enabling the processing of over 400 bulk shipments per hour per device, compared to the previous rate of 150 to 200 bulk shipments per hour per device. This increase in efficiency is expected to accelerate delivery times for customers, promoting swifter and more reliable service.
One of the key advantages of the Drive-through Systems is enhanced accuracy and safety. The dynamic algorithms used in the system ensure highly accurate measurements, minimising discrepancies and reducing the need for manual handling, which in turn lowers the risk of workplace injuries. Additionally, the automated dimensioning reduces processing times and enables faster transit and delivery times. Precise measurement also optimises space and load planning, resulting in better resource utilisation.
The DTP Dimensioning Systems utilise laser dimensioning technology and RFID forklift tagging to automate and enhance the dimensioning process for palletised freight. As pallets pass through the system, the dimensions, whether cuboidal or non-cuboidal, and weight are captured in real-time and are Legal for Trade (LFT) certified. This advancement eliminates the need for manual measurement and stop-start activity, significantly reducing processing times while boosting productivity.
"At FedEx, we are dedicated to embracing innovations that elevate our operational capabilities and service offerings," said Peter Langley, vice president of FedEx Australasia. "The introduction of Dynamic Drive-through Pallet Dimensioning Systems (DTP) in our Australian operations drives greater efficiency and enhances the customer experience. We will continue innovating to further optimise our processes, creating greater value for our business and our customers."
The launch of the DTP system in Australia underscores the company's confidence in the Australian market and its strategic importance within the global network. FedEx Australia is said to play a key role in reshaping transportation and logistics operations. The DTP system has been successfully installed and operational at ten major FedEx stations across Australia, ensuring broad-reaching benefits and operational enhancements nationwide.
Following the successful implementation in Australia, FedEx aims to extend this technology across other key markets globally. This move aligns with the company's broader vision of integrating artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to create smarter, more efficient, and flexible supply chains.
