FYI, this story is more than a year old

Equinix has completed its acquisition of 97% of the equity interests of Japan's Bit-isle, creating the fourth largest data center operator in Japan.

Equinix, which announced its intention to acquire the Japanese data center operator, is using the acquisition to expand its data center footprint and support growing demand for interconnection throughout Asia Pacific.

The acquisition was done through Equinix's Japanese subsidiary and provides Equinix with six more data centers in Japan.

The company now has 10 International Business Exchange data centers in Tokyo and two in Osaka.

Bit-isle's data centers are in close proximity to the existing Equinix International Business Exchange data centers, creating ‘campus-like environments well suited for customers' future expansion needs'.

Equinix says the acquisition strengthens its position is Asia Pacific – its fastest growing region – while improving the company's market position in Japan and helping meet growing demand for interconnection among Japanese businesses.

The company now has 111 data centers in 33 markets worldwide.
