FYI, this story is more than a year old

Equinix is investing more than US$97 million building a new large-scale data center in Sydney.

In making the announcement, the US interconnection and data center company cited Frost - Sullivan figures showing the data center services market is estimated to grow to AU$1.7 billion by 2020.

The new data center, in Alexandria, will be Equinix's fourth in Sydney and will provide 3000 cabinets of capacity when complete. The first phase of 1500 cabinets is scheduled for completion in Q2 2016.

Equinix is touting the new facility's close proximity to the company's other three data centers, saying the interconnection via a dense dedicated fibre loop, enabling customers to interconnect with more than 600 Equinix customers, 250+ cloud providers and 130+ networks.

Jeremy Deutsch, Equinix Australia managing director, says the new centre, SY4, will enable customers to continue to take advantage of innovations including hybrid cloud architectures and the Equinix Cloud Exchange.

“The new facility will ensure that we continue to deliver on our promise to help businesses safeguard their mission-critical data, aid growth and rapid scalable deployment through our global footprint and the highest levels of security and operational reliability,” Deutsch says.

The new centre will take Equinix's local investment close to US$360 million. As well as the Sydney centres, the company has a Melbourne facility, opened late last year.

Frost - Sullivan says Australia's data center services market recorded revenues of AU$698 million in 2013 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 13.9% to 2020.
